Lockdown blues got you?
"Movement is what gives me my zest for life and keeps me bouncing day in, day out," says Abigail from Island Barre.
Movement to me is so much more than maintaining strength, balance, or being able to cross that finish line.
For me, movement is what gives me my zest for life and keeps me bouncing day in, day out. It's such a huge part of my life that akin to water and sleep, I don't know how I would function without it.
Now more than ever movement is what keeps me going. Lockdown has taken so much away from so many of us, it’s easy to fall into a deep hole.
Late last week when we were all forced into lockdown for the fifth time, where alongside many others I once again had to close my business, I quickly fell into this deep hole.
Lucky for me what keeps me going is the fact that I know how to climb out, and it starts with the mind.
Telling myself that nothing is permanent and that everything will be ok. Telling myself to just keep swimming (words of wisdom from a very clever fish named Dory). To acknowledge that it’s ok to feel this way for a short period of time until I choose the moment where I lift myself up with the power of movement.
Movement plays a major role in mental health. We need to understand that it’s no myth that exercise has an incredible ability to make us feel good about ourselves. This is exactly why even in lockdown we are still permitted to go outside for exercise (within 5kms of home) for up to two hours per day.
We should all rejoice in this wonderful experience that we have been blessed with - life and the ability to move.
So next time you're feeling a little blue, tell yourself, everything is going to be ok, nothing is permanent, and start moving. Go for a walk, jog, swim, or surf.
If you're stuck at home due to quarantine, bounce or kick a ball in the backyard, or simply start with 10 star jumps and go from there. Movement feels good and is addictive!
If you need someone to talk to, or help with getting moving, please call out. I’m here to help … I feel you.
My heart goes out to everyone that has been affected. Let’s stick together and remember… nothing is permanent.
