Love your teeth this Dental Health Week
Children, families and staff at early childhood services across Bass Coast and South Gippsland Shire are getting excited about Dental Health Week.
Children, families and staff at early childhood services across Bass Coast and South Gippsland Shire are getting excited about Dental Health Week, with this year’s theme being ‘Love your teeth’.
Dental Health Services Victoria (DHSV) supports the Australian Dental Association’s campaign, which runs from August 1 - 7.
This year’s campaign focuses on the importance of taking steps to care for your teeth and gums.
Through DHSV’s Smiles 4 Miles program, early childhood services are spreading the message about the importance of good oral health habits for the whole family.
The Smiles 4 Miles program is an initiative of DHSV and is implemented locally by Bass Coast Health. It aims to improve the oral health of Bass Coast and South Gippsland Shire preschool aged children and their families by encouraging healthy eating, healthy drinking, good oral hygiene and regular dental visits.
Smiles 4 Miles coordinator Beth says: “There are 30 kindergartens, long day care centres and family day care providers participating in Smiles 4 Miles this year. This means Smiles 4 Miles is working to improve the oral health of 2025 of our youngest community members and their families!”.
During Dental Health Week, early childhood services will be teaching children about brushing their teeth twice a day, the importance of regular dental visits and engaging families on the importance of limiting sugary foods and drinks through ‘sometimes and everyday foods’ displays in their centres.
