Mayor's Message
From Cr Clare Le Serve.
By Cr Clare Le Serve
I’d like to commence by saying hello to everyone in our community and express how delighted I am to be elected as the new Mayor of Bass Coast. It is a great honour and I’m thrilled to be supported by Deputy Mayor, Cr Rochelle Halstead and I look forward to working with the whole group of Bass Coast Councillors.
I thank my Councillor colleagues for their support and of course Cr Michael Whelan for his stewardship over the past couple of years. He leaves the Mayoral role in such a great position.
As many of you may know, I was recently acknowledged for ten years of service in Council, a space I have loved working in and am excited to continue in. I have lived in this region for over 50 years, raising my family here and I am committed to this unique and magnificent area.
As one of Australia’s fastest growing regions we have huge opportunity to grow our economy and boost jobs, particularly for our young people.
I am dedicated to ensuring we do all we can to create as many opportunities as possible for the younger generations to continue to live, be educated and work in beautiful Bass Coast.
Bass Coast Shire Council has recently delivered some major pieces of work. As Mayor, I will be working with community to support climate change, reconciliation, protection of our coasts from erosion, support the arts and culture sectors as well as delivering support to our farming community.
I want to continue Council’s work highlighting issues of equality for women and improving outcomes for disadvantaged sectors within our community. Council is partnering with a range of community organisations to bring awareness through the 16 Days of Activism. Starting on November 25 (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) and running to December 10 (Human Rights Day) you can be involved and together we can help change the story and create a future where we are all safe, equal, and respected.
The people of Bass Coast expect first class service delivery and I will be focused on doing all I can to help Council deliver it. I am committed to the ongoing review of Council’s services and to the continuous overall improvement of Council’s governance. This includes good economic management, which is critical to keeping rates affordable and delivering quality services and programs. It ensures we make smart decisions for a more transparent and accountable Council.
As always, there is plenty on in the region during Spring with the Village Feast event having just happened this weekend and many events at both Berninneit and Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre. Of course, there are also all the free and beautiful places to explore in our region.
Inverloch will be hosting a pop-up cinema from November 23 -25 with movies for the whole family to enjoy. From Sunday November 26, beautiful Cape Woolamai will play host to the Australian Surfing Titles where junior surfers will be competing from all around Australia.
If you’re planning to stay at home, then maybe make the most of our free green waste program which ends on November 26.
Either way, I hope you all have a wonderful week.
