Mayor’s Message

Hello Bass Coast,

I hope this message finds you well. I am delighted to share some exciting updates and important information about recent events and ongoing initiatives in our vibrant community.

Last week marked a significant collaboration between the Bass Coast Shire Council and three of our region's largest employers: Phillip Island Nature Parks, Westernport Water, and Bass Coast Health. Together, we launched a community campaign focused on how we can all play active roles in fostering safety and well-being within our communities, homes, and workplaces.

As part of the United Nations' international campaign, "16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence," we hosted a public event on Tuesday, December 5, at Apex Park in Wonthaggi. The Big Respect Pop-up featured the talented artist PollyannaR and aimed to raise awareness and promote solidarity in eliminating gender-based violence. This initiative runs annually from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to 10 December (International Human Rights Day).

Let the festive spirit continue!

Grantville has already had a wonderful Carols event on December 10, and there are more opportunities to showcase your singing talent. Check out the upcoming Carols in various locations and join in the joyous celebrations. Brace yourselves for spectacular fireworks starting on December 12 lighting up the sky in various locations over the coming weeks. You can check out our website for exact events happening.

I'm thrilled to report the success of the Inverloch Street Party, which saw a fantastic turnout. It was fantastic to hear so many people enjoyed the festivities, including our beloved dinosaurs donning Christmas hats as part of the Bass Coast Dinosaurs Trail.

Bass Coast also played host to the Richmond Tigers last week who came down to enjoy pre-season training at Inverloch, Kilcunda and at the Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve which had a huge public turnout. There were hundreds of local fans in attendance with a television broadcast showcasing our regional sporting facilities and the natural beauty of our environment and first-class hospitality.

As we embrace the beauty of the season, it's hard not to notice the rapid growth of grass due to recent weather and abundant rainfall. Rest assured, our council staff are actively addressing concerns about long grass around parks and reserves. Our mowers are working tirelessly as part of the regular maintenance program, with additional scheduling to ensure the grass stays as short as possible.

Our goal is to present a community with neatly trimmed grass on both Council and private properties for a joyous Christmas.

If you have any concerns about long grass that needs attention, please log a Customer Request through Council's Customer Portal at www.basscoast.vic.gov.au/contact. Your feedback is invaluable in helping us maintain a safe and beautiful environment for all.

If you’re still thinking of the Christmas shopping you need to do – please remember we have so many lovely shops with a wide array of gifts and vouchers. Let’s keep it local.

Thank you for your continued support and participation in building a strong and connected community in Bass Coast.
