Mayor's Message

Last Monday we unveiled the newly renovated croquet pavilion at the Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve. This project, made possible through collaborative efforts and community support, stands as a testament to our commitment to enhancing our local amenities for the benefit of all.

The upgraded pavilion boasts accessible amenities, a versatile social space, modern toilets, ample storage, and a convenient kitchenette. The total cost of over $700,000 was made achievable through various contributions, including a generous grant of $440,000 from the Victorian Government Stimulus Program, a $240,000 contribution from our Council, and a commendable $25,000 donation from the Wonthaggi Croquet Club. Such partnerships exemplify the strength and unity within our community.

During the opening event, I had the pleasure of meeting with members of the Wonthaggi Croquet Club, including the dedicated volunteers who are the lifeblood of our community. Volunteers play an indispensable role in shaping our communities. Their selfless contributions, whether in sports clubs, charitable organisations, or community initiatives, are the very essence of what makes our region thrive.

As we approach Volunteer Week from May 20, I am thrilled to announce Victorian State Treasurer Tim Pallas has chosen local Newhaven based charity Free 3D Hands as the beneficiary of the Victorian Budget 2024/25 Charity. This reflects the incredible global impact of Free 3D Hands and their commitment to improving lives through innovative and open source solutions. I extend my congratulations to Mat Bowtell and his team for their remarkable work and the positive change they bring around the world.

This year Volunteer Week celebrates "Something for Everyone" and provides us with an opportunity to express our gratitude and appreciation for the invaluable contributions of volunteers. Their dedication, passion, and generosity are the cornerstone of our community's strength and resilience. I encourage everyone to join me in celebrating and recognising the remarkable individuals who embody the spirit of service and compassion and be inspired to get involved in the coming week so that you can also consider volunteering.
