Mayor's message
By Cr Clare Le Serve.
I am delighted to share some exciting news with you.
Our beautiful Bass Coast Shire is taking another step to preserve the natural beauty and heritage that makes our region so special.
We are inviting all residents and landholders to nominate their favourite trees to be included in the Council's Significant Tree Register.
As your Mayor, I am thrilled to see this initiative come to life, especially as we approach National Tree Day on July 28, 2024.
Trees hold a special place in our hearts and our environment.
Whether it's a tree with ecological importance, cultural significance, or historical value, every tree has a story to tell.
Now, you have the opportunity to ensure these trees and their stories are protected for future generations.
Nominating a tree is simple and can be done through a dedicated app or via our Council's website (trees.basscoast.vic.gov.au).
You can even submit photographs and other details while you're out and about.
Once your nomination is reviewed and confirmed by a panel of specialists, the tree will be added to our Significant Tree Register.
This ensures it receives the protection it deserves under our Urban Forest Strategy and local laws.
While we are talking about stories, we are very proud to again be sponsoring the Festival of Stories this week which I personally can't wait to attend.
This festival demonstrates the commitment to arts and culture throughout our community which comes in all forms, bringing people together.
Tickets are available for the whole festival or for specific days.
The Festival kicks off Friday evening with a special screening of 'The Dressmaker.'
On Saturday you can enjoy sessions with Sue Maslin and Rosalie Ham discussing the making of the film; Veronica Gorrie sharing insights from her powerful memoir 'Black and Blue;' and more.
Engage with celebrated figures like Hannie Rayson, Kerry O'Brien, and Rosie Batty throughout the day.
Sunday promises thought-provoking panels on journalism, storytelling, and self-perception with speakers like Jacinta Parsons, Robyn Davidson, and Wendy Harmer.
Explore the book market in the grand foyer to pick up the perfect read and discover new favourites.
I'm very proud that we have such beautiful spaces all over our region for people to come together and celebrate the environment, sports, recreation, arts, and so much more.
Enjoy your week.
