Mayor's Message

By Cr Clare Le Serve

It has been an incredible journey to meet so many residents, volunteers, and community members throughout my Council and Mayoral term. Time and again, I've seen firsthand how resilient our community is - ready to jump into action whenever challenges arise. Whether facing emergencies or simply celebrating our achievements, Bass Coast pulls together like no other.

This year has had its share of trials, from the tragedy of the drowning incident early on, to the wild storms that have tested us once again. My heart goes out to all affected, and I am so proud of how our community and Council responded in those moments of need. It reminds us how important it is for everyone to enjoy our beautiful environment safely, whether they are locals or visitors.

Throughout this Council term, we've seen significant investment in our community, with major projects and capital works that have transformed Bass Coast. The construction of Berninneit, our award-winning cultural hub in Cowes, has become a hive of activity, bringing people together to celebrate arts, culture, and community connection. We've also delivered over $16 million in boat ramp upgrades, funded by Better Boating Victoria, enhancing accessibility and safety across the region. These upgrades, along with vital road safety improvements to rural roads, are essential investments that will serve our community for years to come.

Council, under the strong guidance of CEO Greg Box and the Executive Leadership Team, has proven its dedication to serving the community, from emergency management to delivering key events and celebrations. Their 'can-do' attitude has been crucial in getting the job done, no matter the circumstances.

As Mayor, I've had the privilege of overseeing many civic ceremonies, awards, and events. Advocacy has been a significant part of this role, and I've proudly represented our community at the State and Federal Government levels, as well as through the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV), Peri Urban, One Gippsland, and the Local Government Mayoral Advisory Panel, ensuring that Bass Coast's needs are heard.

I also want to extend my thanks to my fellow councillors. Elected during the height of the pandemic, we have faced unprecedented challenges, and I appreciate their unwavering support and adaptability throughout this term.

While my term as Mayor will continue until the election, due to election period rules, this will be my final message. I've made the decision not to run in the upcoming council election, and it is time for me to move on and allow the next council to continue making a positive impact on our wonderful community. I am confident the foundations we have laid together will lead to an even brighter future for Bass Coast.

Thank you all for your ongoing support. Together, we've achieved so much.
