A long-distance runner has just fallen short of his aim to run from Melbourne to Cowes in a day to raise funds to fight cancer.

Melbourne butcher Cam Moore dedicated his month-long running challenge to his family friend, San Remo's Les Blick, who passed away in November from cancer.

The 32-year-old took part in the Cancer Council's March Charge challenge, aiming to complete a single-day-120km run from Chelsea Heights to Cowes on March 27.

However, Cam reached 102km before calling off the run just outside of Surf Beach "after his knees gave in".

Cam has so far raised $4850 and was hoping to reach $5000 at the time of going to press.

Les Blick's son Jordan said his mother still lives in San Remo, moving there with Les about 10 years ago, and owning a holiday house in Ventnor for about 15 years before.
