Island roars as huge crowds attend the MotoGP

Crowds of motorsport fans flocked to Phillip Island over the weekend, with the attendance at this year’s MotoGP estimated to be the biggest since Casey Stoner’s last win in 2012.

The Australia Grand Prix Corporation said the total estimated attendance across the event was 91,245, with a race day estimated attendance of 38,645.

In 2024, the total estimated attendance was 80,009 and the race day estimated attendance was 33,571.

Highlights from the final day of the event included Australian Senna Agius winning the Moto2 race. Senna is the first Australian to ever win a Moto2 race in Australia. There was another Australian on the podium in Moto3, with Joel Kelso finishing second, just behind Jose Antonio Rueda.

Unfortunately, Australian riders weren’t able to make it a triple podium celebration.

After qualifying third, Jack Miller’s run of bad luck at the island continued, crashing out on lap six during the MotoGP. Spanish rider Raul Fernandez took the victory, his first MotoGP win, ahead of Italian Fabio Di Giannantonio and Marco Bezzecchi.

Bezzecchi also won the MotoGP Sprint on Saturday and during practice time on Friday, he became the first MotoGP rider to go under 1.27 at the Phillip Island Circuit, setting a new circuit record of 1.26.492.

Last year’s winner, and current leader on the Championship points tally, Marc Marquez was unable to race, recovering from an injury in Indonesia at the start of October.
