Movie club presents Empire of Light
Olivia Coleman stars in “Empire of Light”, this month’s film presented by the Movie Club on June 22.

This month’s Movie Club film, on Thursday June 22, at St Philip’s is “Empire of Light”.

Release in 2022, an English drama written and directed by Sam Mendes, it stars Olivia Coleman, Michael Ward, Toby Jones and Colin Firth.

A duty manager of a seaside cinema forms a relationship with a new employee on the south coast of England in 1980-81.

This film looks at racism when racial tensions in Britain were high; also, sexism and mental illness.

This might sound very sombre, but it is not! It is a character study that draws you in and it is not hard to care a great deal about the characters.

Mendes wrote the part of Hilary for Coleman after seeing her in The Crown and her role is based partly on his mother.

To celebrate the Winter Solstice, the club will be having Mulled Wine, so please bring a glass or cup if you would like to indulge.

There are nibbles provided and please bring a cup for tea or coffee if you prefer that.

The film starts at 8pm and the doors open at 7.15pm. The film is in the romance/drama genre and rated R for language. It runs for 115 minutes.

Entrance is by membership only, as this is a requirement of Film Societies for buying the rights to show the film.

We also have a 2024 waiting list and any queries or applications for a membership form can be made at phillipislandmovieclub@gmail.com

Our next film “Never Gonna Snow Again” will be on Thursday July 27.
