My Week at The Advertiser

Work experience

By Callum Stephens

I am a Year 10 student at Bass Coast College and last week I did my work experience week at the Phillip Island and San Remo Advertiser.

When I was told I would be doing my work experience at The Advertiser I was excited but did not think this could shape my idea of a future career.

When I arrived at the office the staff were kind and immensely helpful and clear on what they needed help with.

I did some simple things like editing some sports stories for the paper on my first day.

However, it was on Tuesday and the days after that I truly discovered the joy of being a journalist.

I went on a several stories with Sandy Guy, who has been a journalist for many years.

We visited a gathering of volunteers at St John's Church and later attended a tourism planning meeting - the first was like a great meeting of friends, the latter very official, but I did get to try out a golf simulator.

The following day Sandy and I attended a Volunteer Expo at Berninneit where I was given the opportunity to independently ask people questions, take down notes, and write down these notes into a form of stories.

At the Advertiser they allowed me to publish stories on their website and have given me the opportunity to draft this story of my experience here.

The staff at the Advertiser have helped me discover an enjoyment to go out to events, learn about so much, meet people, ask questions, and write about it for all the community to see.
