Newhaven College Year 9 students Riley Lawrence and Mitch White have won this year’s Cows Create Careers Advertising Competition, winning $1000 to be spent on educational programs for their school.

Cows Create Careers, in partnership with MaxCare, invited schools across Australia to create an advertisement for the dairy industry. Competing against 98 schools across Australia and receiving 29.65 per cent of the public votes, Newhaven College is delighted by the result.

“Every year our Year 9 students are given the opportunity to nurture two calves as part of our community program,” said Elizabeth Hall, Year 9 teacher and program coordinator.

“The experience pairs beautifully with the holistic Year 9 immersive program focusing on our environment and rural location.

“The fact that Riley and Mitch have won this award is fantastic. The funds generously donated by MaxCare will further contribute to our Year 9 experiential program.”

The Cows Create Careers program provides a practical and insightful introduction to the Australian dairy industry. This hands-on educational program involved 218 schools and 4798 students across Australia.

Cows Create Careers, Program Manager, Deanne Kennedy said the program educates students on all the different career opportunities available to them in the dairy industry, from working directly with the cows to sales, marketing and advertising.

“It’s important to introduce this program into schools at a time when students are thinking about their future,” she said.

MaxCare supplies the calf milk replacer which the students use to nurture the calves.

While on campus, the calves stay in the purpose-built Moo-Haven enclosure while they are cared for by the Year 9 students.

This year Riley and Mitch named their calves ‘Goose’ and ‘Moose’ and are very excited to have used an image of their calves for the winning advertisement for MaxCare.
