This week Newhaven College’s Year 12 students said their farewells to school life.

The festivities started with a bit of clowning around, students dressed as Superheroes, followed by ‘muck up’ day dress-ups and commando games, squelching through the mud at the Year 9 Environmental Centre.

The students had the opportunity to release some energy and tension before the more emotional formalities of their last all-school assembly and final farewells. The release of the 51 white doves (representing the 51 students at Newhaven College in its first year) concluded the last day activities. A Valedictory dinner at Silverwater Resort with teachers and parents was a fitting final event to enjoy time together as a Year 12 cohort.

Principal Tony Corr addressed the assembled 2022 Year 12s.

“The journey of each year level is different but yours has been especially unique. Unique because your journey has not always been clear. The path intended for you detoured into the unknown a few times.

“That ability to adapt, to handle the unexpected, and the attitude you have shown towards it, will serve you very well in the future,” he said.

“As you go into the world, we hope you take some of what we value here at Newhaven College with you. Not just a love of learning, but the love of the outdoors, the benefits of physical activity, the value of creative endeavours, the importance of respect and the place of community.

“They are what we value as a school and we hope have nourished you in your time here.”

The presentation of awards at their final assembly highlighted the talent found at Newhaven College.

Awards were presented to students in each Year 12 subject with the highest grades and who have made the greatest contribution to the development of the subject for the benefit of all students. Plus, awards were presented to those who displayed House values, excellence in sport, and the recipients of Gold Duke of Edinburgh.

These were followed by the Australian Defence Force (ADF) Future Innovators Award, going to Hamish Brosnan, and the ADF Long Tan Leadership Award which went to Madison Grand-Court.

The two most prestigious awards were the final presentations. The Principal’s Prize went to Nicholas Thomas and the Papworth Prize went to Jasmine Sullivan. These students represent Newhaven College with their excellent academic achievements and values.

This particular group of Year 12s represents the last ties to the Boys Home Road campus. Thirteen of the 2022 Year 12 students were from the last Prep class at the old school before moving to the environmentally diverse 83-acre campus in Rhyll. These students, along with the whole Year 12 cohort, are dedicated to their school and will have life-long ties to Newhaven College, as well as the surrounding community.
