A farcical and sinister scandal
1 min read

The Phillip Island Movie Club (PIMC) presents Wicked Little Letters on Wednesday, May 15 at Berninneit, starting at 7pm.

An English film, directed by Thea Sharrock, it is set in a 1920s English seaside town that bears witness to a farcical and occasionally sinister scandal.

This riotous mystery comedy is based on a stranger than fiction true story and follows two neighbours: deeply conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley).

When Edith and fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town's women - led by police officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan) - begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all.

Although the story has been told as a comedy, it is based on a true story of vicious poison pen letters that even today have a relevance although the medium is now Facebook, Instagram or TikTok. The moral of the story is, as one critic said, "If you want a mystery solved, best put a local busybody and a woman police officer on the case."

The film will start at 7pm, runs for 96 minutes and is rated MA.

Please pre-book your seat prior to the night as bookings are already high.
