Our Lady Star of the Sea Primary School is a proud partner with The Resilience Project (TRP).
A school spokesperson said students participate in weekly lessons, from TRP's evidence based whole school wellbeing program, focusing on gratitude, empathy, mindfulness and building emotional literacy.
"Students also have the opportunity to strengthen their resilience every day, with daily Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM) chats in every classroom.
"This journey to build resilience in our young people is a combined community effort with our youngest community members participating in TRP at Island Kids, and after completing TRP program at Our
Lady Star of the Sea, students have the opportunity to continue their resilience journey at Bass Coast College."
The OLSS spokesperson said recently published findings from an independent evaluation by Monash University, show a long-term, whole-school approach makes a meaningful and lasting difference to mental health and wellbeing.
"The study found that after six years, students at The Resilience Project schools saw higher scores across all positive mental health outcomes, including life satisfaction, hope and coping skills.
"Participants also saw significantly lower odds of mental illness (34 per cent lower for anxiety and 47 per cent lower for depression)," the spokesperson said.
"This research shows that when wellbeing is embedded in school culture, there are incredible long-term results.
"A dedication to supporting youth mental health is more crucial now than ever before.
"Staff, parents and students are all involved in building a culture of Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM) at Our Lady Star of the Sea, and we couldn't be prouder."
