Independent candidate for the Monash electorate, Deb Leonard, has welcomed the announcement of the election date, saying it finally gives people the chance to have their say at the ballot box.

On Sunday, the Prime Minister announced the election for May 21.

Ms Leonard said that since commencing her campaign in January, she has been surprised at the level of animosity and disappointment in the performance of the two major political parties which has resulted in a warm reception for a moderate independent.

“It’s time to take strong, positive action on climate change; it’s time to put an end to corruption with government and it’s time that we had a strong, independent candidate that will represent the communities of the Monash electorate,” Ms Leonard said.

“I’m excited by the campaign over the next six weeks and look forward to meeting as many voters in that time to hear about the issues that are important to them,” she said.
