Last week Cowes turned purple for the Change for Sam event where hundreds of people gathered in an effort to recognise and reduce gender-based violence.

This event was organised by a range of organisations and volunteers who are part of what is the backbone of what makes up a community.

In coming weeks we will be shining a spotlight on volunteers in our community as we gear up for our upcoming community events including our community awards program. The community spirit of Bass Coast is strong and something I see every day wherever I am - from arts events, community houses, sporting clubs and so much more. I am always so grateful to be a part of such incredible groups of people who bring ideas and projects to life to better our region.

More than 3,000 people are expected to come and celebrate the football double-header on Sunday, May 12, at Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve.

The Mother's Day event celebrates the second year of Bass Coast's partnership with the Hawthorn Football Club and gender equality.

Entry is free and gates open at 10.30am. For the kids, there will be inflatables and a half time Auskick game. Kids are welcome to join in on the day if they are not part of a local club. Wonthaggi Power Canteen will be open for refreshments.

Our next Council meeting is Wednesday, May 15. All our Council Meetings are recorded and are hosted on our YouTube channel - Bass Coast Shire Council. I'd encourage you to hit the subscribe button and tune in so you can see what goes on at our monthly meetings.

With the arrival of Autumn and the cooler months, leaves are starting to fall. Our dedicated staff work hard to keep our streets and places clean and safe. Leaf litter is collected on a street-by-street basis but if you notice something you need help with, please always contact our friendly staff who are highly efficient in solving issues.

You can find a range of details on various queries on our website at www.basscoast.vic.gov.au/contact.

A reminder that our Sustainable Living Series webinars are still running, in partnership with South Gippsland Shire Council and energy efficiency experts from Renew. Our first set of four webinars covering solar, batteries, all-electric homes and electric vehicles have been recorded and are available to watch online.

The next webinar is Winter Comfort for Renters and will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 6pm - 7.30pm. The session will cover many of the small changes you can make to ensure your rental home is more comfortable and cheaper to heat this winter. There is always lots of time for questions.

Registrations are essential, so please book now: thecap.com.au/sustainable-living-series
