Newhaven College: built by community, serving community
1 min read

Since its founding in 1979, by the Phillip Island community, Newhaven College has been shaped by a spirit of collaboration and inclusion.

One of the most tangible ways this commitment is seen is in how the College's facilities are shared with their broader community,

The school has become a vibrant hub, supporting local clubs and organisations across sport, arts, culture and science.

Currently, the College's state of the art gymnasium  is home to the Phillip Island Rips Basketball Club; while the Phillip Island Football Netball Club makes use of the oval year-round for training.

A wide variety of other groups also find a home at the College, including the Bass Coast Astronomy and Cosmology Club, Offshore Theatre, Arts Society Phillip Island, AFL Victoria's School Holiday Program, Hockey Victoria, Narre Warren Calisthenics Club, Gippsland United Big V Basketball, Westernport Steelers Basketball Club, Phillip Island Soccer Club, Oakleigh AFL and Koo Wee Rup Netball Club.

When the Cowes oval was undergoing renovations in 2024, and closed and off limits to the community for five months, Newhaven College offered the Phillip Island Football Netball Club the use of its oval for training in the lead up to the football season.

"Without the assistance given to our club by Newhaven College, I am not sure what we would have done," Club President Chris Ross said of the offer.

"They gave us access to both their oval and school gymnasium for player training sessions, because our Cowes ground was pretty much unusable. I want to thank Newhaven College sincerely."

The College said its commitment to community is reflected not only in sharing their facilities, but also in nurturing relationships.

Active communication and collaboration between the College and its broader communities are central to the College's values.

At its heart, Newhaven College remains what it has always been - a place created by the community, for the community.
