Volunteers needed for health servic

Latrobe Community Health Service (LCHS) is urgently seeking volunteers to fill several roles across Gippsland, as the demand for community support services continues to grow, including from the Bass Coast region.

"Our volunteers help us provide services to people who need those most - everything from transport to appointments, to companionship at social support groups, to respite or end of life care," Volunteer Program Team Leader Adriana Pezzutto said.

LCHS is on the lookout for transport drivers in the Latrobe Valley, Wellington, Bass Coast, and East Gippsland, and social support group volunteers in Churchill and Morwell.

LCHS is also looking to grow its Buddy Bears program - made up of volunteers who sew comfort bears for children who access LCHS services, local hospitals or community centres.

In 2023-24, volunteers contributed 21,432 hours of service and $927,377 of value to LCHS.

"The impact of our volunteers is felt across the entire organisation - and their contribution allows us to invest in more free or low-cost services. Without their help, we wouldn't be able to provide as many people with affordable and accessible healthcare and social support," Ms Pezutto said.

Transport driver Ian Anderson says that as a volunteer, he receives much more than he gives.

"Volunteering allows me to give something back to my community. It provides a sense of achievement and purpose," Mr Anderson said.

"I love being a transport driver because there are hundreds of people that have health and transport issues. This service eases the burden of worrying about how they will get to appointments, while also providing an ear to clients who might not see or speak to other people for days.

"Clients are so appreciative of the service, but it is us drivers who appreciate being able to help them," he added.

Mr Anderson encourages anyone who has some free time to think about giving volunteering a go.

"I would encourage anyone who has a day or hours to spare, or if you are retired or available - volunteering provides such a rewarding experience!"
