In another blow to Phillip Island's tourism industry, the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championships won't be returning to the island this year.

Announcing the 2021 calendar for the Superbikes, FIM Supersport and Supersport 300 World Championships,  FIM and DORMA WSBK Organisation confirmed that due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it's been agreed there will be no Australian round on the 2021 calendar.

The plan is to return to the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit with the first event of the 2022 Championship.

This year's calendar is due to start on May 21 in Spain, with events being held in Portugal, Italy, UK, Netherlands, Czech Republic, France, Argentina and Indonesia.

The dates, events and attendance of spectators are subject to the pandemic situation and the approval of the relevant governments and authorities.

David Bennett, Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, General Manager said: "Phillip Island has hosted more World Superbike events than any other circuit in the world. We agree that now is the time to focus our efforts on the Official Test and season opening Round in 2022."

Mr Bennett said the decision not to run a round in 2021 will not adversely impact the continuation of the event.

"The event is secured for the Phillip Island Circuit until 2027.”
