Nurses take care to the community
Bass Coast Health District Nurse Mandeep Kaur cares for client Mario Bonis of Cowes. Mario says support from the District Nursing team has helped him continue to live at home at the age of 101!

Mario Bonis of Cowes is full of praise for local nurses. The 101-year-old said because of their care, he is still able to still live in his own home.

Mario’s commendation came as Bass Coast Health (BCH) celebrated Nursing in the Community Week, from September 12.

A dedicated team of nurses from BCH is caring for people in their homes, helping them to lead better lives and remain at home for as long as they can.

The District Nurses provide a range of services from wound care and medication management through to palliative care, and monitoring and support of clinical needs.

The nurses are based at BCH’s San Remo site and service the entire Bass Coast Shire, from Cowes to Inverloch, and from Wonthaggi to Grantville and into the hinterland.

BCH District Nurse Mandeep Kaur said, “It’s a privilege to be able to meet our clients in their homes and to provide the care they need without them having the inconvenience of travelling to receive treatment.”

Her client Mario Bonis of Cowes thanked the BCH District Nursing team, which has helped him to continue living at home despite being 101 years old.

“The key to living to 100 is to work hard and no funny business,” he quipped.

Another client, Marie Famularo, said the care of District Nurses such as Steph Wylie was “marvellous”.

“I see the community nurses as my guardian angels. The loss of my husband was very difficult but the District Nurses made it bearable with their support and kindness,” Marie said.

BCH often seeks new team members. Opportunities to join the BCH District Nursing and Palliative Care team are advertised on BCH’s recruitment website: basscoasthealth.mercury.com.au
