Rebecca Lister’s play 2.20 AM presents a group of three people and their facilitator in a writing group; all are grieving a relative who has suicided.
One might well ask why the director, Melissa McMillan has chosen a play about suicide for her directing adult drama debut?
Andrew Hamilton a reviewer for Eureka Street theatre magazine helps explain.
“Suicide is a topic clothed in silence. Many shy away from a subject that brings such despair. It is difficult to talk about; to know what to say. The silence breeds fear and isolation in the people who grieve. Lister’s play is hopeful then because it breaks the silence.”
The play’s trajectory is from isolation and silence to conversation, companionship and concerted action. It models a way of responding with reason and open hearts to suicide. The play is involving, informing, moving, not depressing.
Rebecca Lister is a social worker and her programs inspire her work as a playwright.
2.20 AM is authentic, illuminating, moving and hopeful.
Huge credit to Melissa McMillan and her cast, Mel Beynon, Lauren White, Annie Khoury and Dave White for binging this sensitive, beautiful and very important piece to audiences on Phillip Island and Bass Coast Shire.
