Opening Night - Sunset Strip
Ruby Spencer and Simon Furniss in Offshore Theatre's performance of "Sunset Strip", opening Thursday at the Newhaven College Black Box Theatre.

This Thursday night, June 13, the Offshore Theatre Inc staged reading of Suzie Miller's play, Sunset Strip opens at the Newhaven College Black Box Theatre.

If the curious coincidence of the play's shared name with one of our lovely local neighbourhoods hasn't piqued your interest yet, there is plenty more to encourage locals to see this quality drama by the Offshore group.

As well as introducing three new talents to the stage in Ruby Spencer, Jason Good and Christy Spottiswood, the accomplished Simon Furniss completes the troupe of four. Under the skilled direction of Remi D'Agostin the cast bring the story of a family beset by many challenges to life in a realistic and sensitive way.

The staging is complemented by the craft of another very talented local, Chris White, affectionately known as Doc. Chris is a dedicated member of the Offshore group who not only performed in both of the award winning 2023 Offshore productions, he is also the committee secretary and won a GAT (Gippsland Amateur Theatre) award for his soundscape in 2.20AM in which he also played a leading acting role.

The Offshore production team is thrilled that Chris is again doing the sound design for their new show and delighted this includes some original compositions by Chris which the audience will no doubt enjoy.

The play was described in the Sydney Morning Herald as "a tenderly gripping, frequently funny exploration of familial love, loyalty and patience."

It is a play which explores human vulnerability. Set against a backdrop of a once beautiful but now dried up lake the story reveals the redemptive qualities of each of the four characters, who all have scars of life and familiar flaws and challenges.

Offshore Theatre Inc prides itself on bringing quality theatre to Bass Coast. The group is enjoying a wonderful revival after the setbacks of Covid and the loss of some invaluable committee members in recent years.

The support of Newhaven College who have welcomed the not-for-profit theatre group to use their fabulous Black Box facility for recent productions has meant the survival of the Offshore Theatre Group and audiences can again enjoy quality theatre in excellent facilities, comfortable seats and a state of the art production space.

Support your local talent and have a terrific night/afternoon out in warmth and comfort by booking on TryBooking for one of the four shows performed this week.
