Dusties Tame Bulldogs with a Rousing Win

Seniors

A sunny day welcomed the island over to Warragul, however, as the day wore on, the wind picked up and made conditions very difficult for both sides.

With a number of Island players injured or unavailable, this was always going to be a tricky affair.

The Island won the toss and kicked with a four or five goal wind.

The game started with a hotly contested ball with both sides struggling to have clean possession, both sides had chances to kick pretty easy goals, but the wind made this a very difficult task.

The Island waited ten minutes to register their first goal when Tully Dickie received a hand ball out the back from Jai Jordan to run into an open goal.

Two minutes later Jack Taylor picked up a loose ball courtesy of Pederson to snap truly from the boundary.

Cam Pederson was beginning to get well on top in the middle with Max Walton and Daniel Pierce making the most of their opportunities to get the clearances going the Island’s way.

Tom Niven, Jessie Patullo and Mark Griffin were working well in the back half to move the ball forward.

Unfortunately, the Island had too many shallow entries that allowed the Dusties to counterattack and use up valuable time, and when Staples received a dubious free in front, it put the Dusties in striking distance with a much-needed goal into the wind.

The Bulldogs started the second quarter full of run and with some great work from the midfield. Hayden Bruce was on the end of a free kick and lobbed a great goal from inside the boundary in front of a rowdy local crowd.

Some desperate work from Jessie Patullo and a run down from behind to save a certain goal.

Again, some classy work from the Dusties saw Todd Beck run into an open goal after a terrible turn over in the middle of the ground by the Island.

The pressure was mounting and Dusties were getting ascendancy in the middle, their second goal came from a perfect front and centre with the snap finding the middle of the goal.

Dusties were well on top, and players were running forward of the ball and keeping their width, making it hard for the Island defence.

Jack Taylor was working overtime down back with a tremendous run down with a holding the ball stopping a certain goal.

The defence were under immense pressure but a down the field free kick to Jordy Patullo eased the pressure with a 40-metre kick finding the mark.

Some costly errors in front of the goals by the Doggies cost three goals, pushing the margin out to 17 points.

Dusties are now running rampant from the middle, the Islands forwards not prepared to work hard enough.

At half time Dusties 9-5-59 to Island 4-6-30.

Phillip Island start the third quarter full of running with some positional changes proving the difference.

Walker plays on from a missed shot from Phillip Island, superbly tackled by Jai Jordan for the islands first goal for the quarter.

Unfortunately, the Island had many chances but continued to be inaccurate.

McMillan now playing forward gets his first for the day and looks dangerous up forward.

The Dusties are defending stoutly and burning up valuable time on the clock.

The Island had their chance to get back into the game kicking 2.6 to 1.1.
Third quarter score 10-6-66 to the Island 6-12-48.

Eighteen points down and the Dogs still believe they’re a chance, Jesse Patullo has moved forward and looks dangerous, unfortunately for the Island a kick from the boundary from 70 metres dribbles through for a goal for the Dusties.

With the Dusties well on top, and unfortunate friendly fire saw the Island’s Hayden Bruce go down with a horrific head injury.

Unfortunately, from here the Dusties got well on top kicking another four goals to have a convincing win against the Island.

It was a brave performance by the Island, with a little more accuracy they would’ve been right in the game.

The Island have some massive games to finish of the season and with the injury list growing there will be challenges and opportunities for the boys to embrace.
