Solid win for U18s - PI vs KB
Scores: Phillip Island: 11.12.78. Kilcunda-Bass: 1.3.9.
After pouring rain all day Friday it was expected the Kennel would be somewhat muddy for the arch-rivals clash between Phillip Island and Kilcunda-Bass.
Somewhat surprisingly, Saturday dawned bright and sunny with a good wind, just perfect for drying out the ground!
Without the Under 16s clash this week due to the visitors unable to field a team for 2023, the ground received a break with no game until 10.30am.
Perfect for the weather gods to continue to dry the ground out, resulting in all games taking place in amazingly good conditions.
So, the surprises began for the day before a ball was bounced.
U18s
The local derby always brings out the best in the Island lads and the contest was red hot from the start.
Neighbours, schoolmates, surfing mates all coming up against each other.
With the Island holding sway in the early skirmishes, Zac Walker providing great drive from the ruck and Ollie Hibbert busy playing his first game in 12 months returning from an ACL.
Darcy Thompson and Captain Finn Cashman both at the bottom of the packs.
Second quarter saw the Island hit top gear as they kicked a number of excellent goals including Walker’s Goal of the Year contender from the clubroom pocket.
Caffieri was providing great drive from half back, and Savona was his usual dependable self at centre half back.
The second half saw the game open up, room for key forwards Ross and Johnson to put on a show, whilst Huther and Sunderland were creating havoc in the forward 50.
The last quarter was all Island as they started playing the football that Coach Huther demands.
Davies was putting on a show across half back well supported by crowd favourite Peppard.
A good win, another box ticked.
