Shared Pathway safely connects communities
A pathway between the Corinella Community Centre and Bass Valley Primary School was officially opened last week.
A shared walking and cycling pathway to safely connect communities between the Corinella Community Centre and the Bass Valley Primary School and Children’s Centre was officially opened last week.
The 6.1 km Guy Road Shared Pathway will link into existing pathways connecting to the Bass Highway in one direction and Coronet Bay in the other.
The pathway was officially opened by Bass Coast Shire Council Mayor, Cr Michael Whelan and the local Member for Bass, Jordan Crugnale, alongside local school and community groups.
Cr Whelan said the pathway will encourage school children, residents and visitors to become more active.
He said the pathway meets a critical local infrastructure need and responds to the region’s growing population and the project is consistent with environmentally sustainable design.
“We are committed to preserve, protect, restore and enhance the natural environment across Bass Coast, as well as cut the carbon footprint of Bass Coast,’’ Cr Whelan said.
“Examples of sustainable design principles include the use of recycled plastic boardwalk decking and bollards instead of timber.
“The pathway’s material will be more sustainable and weather-resistant, retaining less heat in summer and draining more effectively throughout the winter months.”
The pathway was funded by $1.4 million from Bass Coast Shire Council’s Capital Works Program and $1.4 million from the Victorian State Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund.
It consists of more than 700 metres of new fibre-reinforced concrete, as well 750 metres of boardwalk and 4.7 km of gravel shared path.
Consultation
Council said the project followed extensive community consultation and was specifically supported by Bass Valley Primary School, Bass Valley Children’s Centre, Phillip Island Bicycle User Group, Corinella and District community Centre, Corinella Residents and Ratepayer Committee, Bass Coast Road Safety Committee, Tenby Point Residents and Ratepayer Committee, GippSport, Probus Club of Corinella and District and Peregrine Walking Club.
The pathway runs in a westerly direction from the Bass Valley Primary School, along Corinella Road before turning north at Cemetery Road and following unused Road Reserve to Guy Road, continuing west along unused Road Reserve to Tenby Point.
Once at Tenby Point, it follows the northern edge of Guy Road west, to connect to Jamieson Street. From Jamieson Street to Balcombe Street, the path follows the south side road reserve of Smythe Street in Corinella. The Pathway connects to central Corinella where the general store, Community Centre, Community Hall and Harold Hughes Reserve are located.
