It's a rainbow ... but not the kind you want to see.

Residents from Shearwater Estate says diesel fuel leaked into the lake on the estate at the start of the week.

"Four or five days ago, we had a lake full of birds. Now there are none," one resident said, noting there was a very "pungent" smell and houses on the northern side of the lake are "copping a real lungful of diesel fuel".

Staff from Melbourne Water were on site today inspecting the situation and told residents a team would be there tomorrow to start a clean up.

The EPA has also been notified and posted the following statement on its Facebook page this afternoon: "We have received reports of an oil slick on Blue Gum Drain. We have determined this a priority and are dispatching officers to investigate".

Residents claim this is not the first time there has been a fuel leak and said it seems to be coming out of the Blue Gum Industrial Estate.
