Phillip Island Shipwrecks
1 min read

Phillip Island shipwrecks could well be more frequent than history has shown us as the island’s southern coast fronts the notorious Bass Strait.

But many are well known and still remembered by older islanders.

Modern technology has now almost eliminated the chance of shipwrecks occurring on Phillip Island.

Most Phillip Island shipwrecks occurred before the installation of navigation beacons.

At Cape Woolamai – an acetylene gas lantern was initially established in 1928 on the top of the Cape. It is now an automatic solar powered light with 22 km range from an altitude of 112 metres

At the Nobbies, an acetylene gas beacon operated from 1919-1947.

Point Grant – the beacon was built in 1947 and demolished in 1998 to make space for the Nobbies Visitor Centre.

The light at Grossard Point was built in 1925.
