Bass Coast Shire Council has started planning to host popular sports events if Victoria successfully wins the right to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Council said Bass Coast’s natural geographic advantages and extensive experience hosting sporting events makes it the perfect region to host the triathlon, sailing and beach volleyball.

“The Commonwealth Games is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our beautiful region to Australia and the world and grow jobs, business and tourism,” said Bass Coast Mayor Michael Whelan.

“We are hardworking, sport-loving people and while it is only four years to the Games we’re ready to roll up our sleeves and get to work immediately and will be fighting for as many events as we can.

“Imagine how amazing the triathlon would look along the coast near Inverloch and Phillip Island and our beautiful Western Port Bay is the perfect spot for the sailing. Could you imagine a better spot than Cowes to host beach volleyball?

“Of course we would love to see surfing listed as a new event and nowhere in Victoria delivers more consistent waves than Phillip Island.

“We have our own motocross track in Wonthaggi that would be well positioned to take on any BMX events. Other racing pursuits could also be accommodated at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.”

Cr Whelan said the region has many years of experience hosting significant sporting competitions. “In fact just this weekend we hosted the very successful Gippsland Cycle Classic on Phillip Island and in Inverloch.’’

“The Bass Coast Shire Council is open to every opportunity and we are already in discussions with our local State member.

“As a world class tourist destination (recently named in the New York Times as one of the top ten places to visit in the world) our community and business know what it takes to put on a great event. Bring on the 2026 Games!”
