After some wild and windy weather on Sunday morning, the skies finally cleared in time for the Breakers Soccer club at Newhaven to host the Gippsland Soccer League second semi-final.

With the U14s, U17s and U12B red teams securing their place last week in the upcoming grand final series this weekend, after winning their semi-finals, the focus on Sunday was on our remaining teams.

The Seniors and Reserves sides, as well as the Under 12A and Under 12B junior teams, all faced do or die playoffs for a chance to play for the 2023 coveted premiership.

It was not to be for the Seniors or Reserves teams, but the Under 12 Blues secured their place with a 7-3 win over Drouin.

Under 12A

Phillip Island Breakers U12A team played Drouin in the second U/12A semi-final at Newhaven on Sunday.

Drouin scored the first goal, and the Breakers demonstrated some great passing and terrific defensive skills to prevent the visitors scoring again.

Phillip Island goalie, Levi, saved lots of shots and Kaylan kicked the first goal for our Breakers with the half-time score level at 1-1.

A free kick to Phillip Island in the second half from a Drouin handball resulted in a quick pass from Kaylan back to Toby to loop the ball over the opposition into the back of the net (score 2-1) but a quick header from Drouin levelled the score.

Phillip Island applied strong pressure in defence, but goal attempts going forward were unsuccessful.

Another free kick from Toby brought the Breakers back in the lead (3-2). Drouin answered with another goal to again level the score.

An awesome scissor kick from Kaylan took the ball away from the Dragons but the Breakers were still unable to get ahead.

The siren sounded at 3-3.

Extra time was called, with unsuccessful attempts at goal by Kavish and Toby in the first minutes.

Breakers players continued to apply strong pressure and stick close to their Drouin opponents to prevent a further score.

The second five-minute half saw continued pressure applied by Phillip Island. Toby, Kaylan and Angus kicked some great penalties, but the Drouin Dragons were just too strong on the day.

Final score: Drouin defeated Phillip Island 3-3 and 5-4 in penalties.

Thanks to Coach Callum for an amazing season and for his patience, inspiration and skills passed on to his U/12A players this season.

Thanks also to team managers Megan and Melijah, and all the parents who helped with various roles and gave support through the season.

Great work Breakers!

U12B Blue

The Blue team were missing team leader and coach Gareth Kennedy as well as regular Goalkeeper Chase and pocket rocket Henry Kennedy on the day.

But they were lucky enough to have Graeme Sivori step in to take the reins. And boy did the team step up to the challenge.

Cooper filling in as GK was quick to impact the game, once moved up forward.

Drouin took the lead in the first half scoring 2-1 but the Breakers team came back firing to take the win and finish up 7-3.

Congratulations to everyone involved.

Bring on the Breakers versing the Breakers Grand Final.

Reserves

Sunday was not the way they wanted to finish off the season however the Reserves fought hard until the very end.

A tough and physical game for the Breakers saw them up 1-0 at half time only to be held scoreless in the last half by Drouin who managed the 2-1 win.

A fantastic season was enjoyed by all and hopefully better luck next year.

Seniors

After a successful home and away season, a berth in the Grand Final would have been the icing on the cake.

But Leongatha had other plans for the Breakers Senior Men’s team knocking them out of finals contention with a 3-2 win.

Well done to everyone involved and here's to next year!
