U10 Red team gave their all in the last match of the season.
It was a cold and frosty morning with not a breath of wind greeting the pups at the biggest ground in the league as they prepared for their final round of footy for the 2023 season.
Plenty of running and tackling and shepherding was the only way this day was going to go and in the first quarter that’s what we saw.
With Captain Leith Cameron streaming through the middle and Tanner Lee right beside him pushing the ball forward straight into a very determined Wonthaggi backline pushing back but with back men -
Baylin Elliot, Ray Wolfenden, Toby McHugh and Austin Bennett putting their all in it was never going to be a one-sided game.
In the second quarter the Wonthaggi boys came out fired up and instantly pushed it in the back line.
However, Brock Larsson pushed back with the help from Dash Janson, and it wasn’t enough with Wonthaggi a point and goal ahead.
From then on it was all the Islands way with Fletcher Hennessy doing all the damage.
In the third quarter, the backline worked really hard with the two Max's - Maxi Robinson and Maxi Parry working together again to stop the Wonthaggi forwards, Reeve Dennis also had a huge quarter by far the best he’s ever played.
Another few standouts in the third quarter were little Ray Johns, Jack Frank and Ollie Allan getting right in there amongst the foot taller boys.
The last quarter had everyone on their feet with the scores very close after great scoring from Oscar Innes, with huge tackling from Cody Naismith, Bode Bassed, Reef Elliot and Bohdan O'Connell.
It seemed everyone got a touch of the ball and with Eli Long, Eddie Maier and Lenny Nolan up forward scoring freely it wasn’t quite enough as Wonthaggi scored a goal on the siren leaving them ahead of the pups.
The pups played with great intensity and team spirit throughout the entire 2023 season and look forward to watching them grow into great footballers.
Thank you to the U10's red coach - Simon Nolan for all your hard work with the kids, it's safe to say all the kids have had a great season.
