As part of Bass Coast Shire Council’s partnership with the Hawthorn Football Club, the Box Hill Hawks and Casey Demons will be playing at Wonthaggi Rec Reserve on Sunday April 30.
The community is invited to an historic game of footy featuring Box Hill Hawks and Casey Demons at Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve on Sunday April 30.
It is the first time a game for competition points at this level has been played in Bass Coast, so expectations are for a high-quality display of football.
Entry is free, with the VFLW game commencing at 11.30am, followed by the VFL men’s game kicking off at 2.05pm. There will be kid's activities, plenty of food and drink options, plus, best of all, an opportunity to kick the footy or listen to the coaches during the quarter and three-quarter time breaks.
In addition to AFL and AFLW listed players, playing for both the Hawks and Demons, be inspired by and support local players Grace Matser, Sunday Brisbane, Grace McRae, Macie Gilmour and Max Walton as they represent the Box Hill Hawks.
Bass Coast Shire Council entered into a partnership with Hawthorn Football Club in May 2022, working collaboratively to promote Australian Rules Football in Bass Coast Shire. This double-header is also a significant step in Council’s aim to increase women’s participation in sport, by showcasing the pathways available for all our local players to pursue their sporting dreams.
Bass Coast Shire Council Mayor, Michael Whelan, is excited for the VFLW and VFL to be coming to town and the benefits that it will bring for the local community:
"Bass Coast residents will be able to enjoy two highly competitive matches of the sport closest to Victorians’ hearts within their own backyard.
“This fantastic family event is not only important recognition for Wonthaggi as a dynamic regional centre, but also our commitment to gender equality, inclusion and diversity as we drive visibility and opportunity.”
The Mayor said the match is a showcase for Bass Coast’s huge potential, driven by Council’s campaign, Wonthaggi Opportunity Unlocked. This advocacy strategy is designed to meet the demands of growth by generating positive business investment, employment, inclusion and liveability benefit to all community, including government investment.
“Wonthaggi is one of Victoria’s fastest growing communities, with an expected rise in population of 33 per cent by 2036 to nearly 18,000 residents, so it is important that we bring these types of events to a town that is a highly sought after destination to live,” says the Mayor.
“We look forward to discussing funding opportunities with both the state and Federal government to continue improving Wonthaggi’s facilities and events into the future.”
