Island girls strong performance against Warranor
1 min read

U16 Girls

This was the match of the round in the Female Football Gippsland Under 16 competition.

Both Warranor and Phillip Island had only suffered one loss for the season so far and were sitting second and third respectively on the ladder.

Led by their captain for the day Ruby Kent-Ford, the Island girls got off to a great start, with Bethany Grenness running amok up forward and snagging a beautiful long goal to set the tempo for the day.

Olivia Holmes and Gisele Smith dominated around the ball, while Phoenix Stedman and Mia Ward played great games on the wings.

The second quarter saw the girls put their foot down on the pedal and pile on four goals straight to take a commanding lead in the game.
Scarlette Rees and Kyra Carton were providing strong targets up forward, while Piper Nicolaci and Stellah Tilley were holding their space and getting into dangerous attacking positions on numerous occasions and were unlucky not to score more goals.

Unfortunately, Luna Bowker went down in the quarter with a wrist injury and had to leave the game. We wish Luna a speedy recovery.

Lily O’Loughlin, Lily (Elbow) Bow and Gemma Fischer once again provided plenty of run and carry for the team, while Tess Ricardo and Georgia Niven were solid and reliable in defence.

The goals continued and a sensational handball assist from Scarlette (Scar) Rees to Ruby in the forward line saw the captain snag her second goal for the day.

This was a fantastic team game, with some exciting passages of play and you can see that the girls are really starting to gel together as a team.

Final Score: Phillip Island 8.11.59 defeated Warranor 0.2.2.
Best: Olivia Holmes, Gemma Fischer, Ruby Kent Ford, Gisele Smith and Mia Ward.
Goals: Olivia Holmes, Kyra Carton, Bethany Grenness, Scarlett Rees, Stellah Tilley, Lily
