A new program developed on Phillip Island is hoping to raise awareness of mental health issues for teenagers.
Darren “Curl” Marks, the Youth Program Coordinator at the YMCA, said the program came about after a conversation with local surfer Jess Laing.
“Jess from “Girls on Board” surf school approached me about wanting to promote mental health awareness and the positive effects that surfing and a healthy lifestyle can have,” he said.
“One thing led to another, and we are now going to provide a four-week (one lesson per week) program and corresponding social media campaign to normalise conversations around mental health.”
Covid restrictions meant it took a little longer than expected to put the program together, but it’s now set to kick off in November.
“We are aiming to begin on Wednesday, November 11 and run through until December 2,” Darren said.
The lesson will run from 4.30pm until 6pm and hopefully there will be the opportunity to include some yoga and mindfulness sessions as part of the program.
The cost for the four-week program is $150 and it will run at YCW beach on Phillip Island.
To help make it as accessible as possible, both the YMCA and Girls on Board have committed to sponsoring a spot in the course.
Darren is hoping local businesses or individuals will also get on board to help young people with limited funds be able to access the course.
“If you’re able to provide financial support to make this accessible for those who otherwise may not be able to do so, please give me a call,” he said.
Information about the course will be available via Girls on Board Facebook and Instagram accounts.
