Winners – Phillip Island Tennis club – 2020 Spring Men’s Night competition. From Left to Right: Rick Fitzgerald, David Rooks, Lawrence Ferrari and John Lancaster.
Phillip Island Tennis Club has completed another successful Tuesday night men’s competition with the recent grand final play-off between the teams finishing first and second on the ladder after a Covid-restricted seven rounds ‘home and away’ season.
Some very exciting tennis was on display during the final with competition leader – Dolphins (David Rooks, Lawrence Ferrari, Rick Fitzgerald, John Lancaster) defeating the second team challenger –
Seals (Seb Russell, Michael Thornborrow, Michael McLeod, Mark Reid).
The first two sets ended with a win to each team and an overall margin of only one game.
By the end of the fourth set, it was all tied-up – two sets and 16 games each.
With the final two sets to be played, greater tension was a factor and time was running out to secure that illusive advantage.
Dolphins ultimately took the final two sets and were crowned premiers for the season.
This was an intra-club competition which comprised seven teams of four playing six sets of doubles at the club’s synthetic-grass courts in Chapel Street, Cowes.
Following a brief recess over the festive season, it is expected the next season will commence shortly after the start of the new school year.
Meanwhile, weather permitting, men’s social tennis and grading hit-ups will be held at the courts on Tuesday evenings from 6pm.
Anyone interested in playing in the coming Autumn season should attend these hit-ups or leave their contact details with John O’Brien on 0419 104 259.
