PIFNC celebrates Women's Coaching Month: Spotlight on Diddy Wagner

Women's Coaching Month has officially kicked off in the AFL as the football community celebrates and recognizes the contribution of women and girls in coaching roles across the country.

At the Phillip Island Football Netball Club, one name stands out in this celebration: Diddy Wagner, a cornerstone of the Youth Girls AFL team since its inception.

Diddy Wagner has been a driving force behind the Youth Girls team at the Phillip Island Football Netball Club since 2016.

What started as a passionate group of girls aged 13 to 18, embarking on a new era in women's sports has grown into a formidable team under her guidance.

The 2016 season was a year of learning and growth, culminating in a Grand Final appearance, although they fell short against Dalyston.

However the following year (2017) saw them rise to victory and in 2018, they made it to the finals once again.

The 2019 season was particularly notable. With good numbers and high enthusiasm, even players who got limited game time remained committed.

Diddy's methodical approach of gradually integrating new players paid off as the team clinched a hard-fought Grand Final win - their second championship under her leadership.

Diddy Cuthbertson (Wagner) was deservedly named Gippsland Female Coach of the Year in 2019.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the 2020 season with no games played, and the 2021 season saw the team undefeated until lockdowns once again halted their progress.

The 2023 season introduced a new challenge with 16 teams across Gippsland, demanding extensive travel and time. Despite these challenges, the girls finished in the middle of the pack, showcasing their resilience and commitment.

In 2024 the league was split into two divisions, leading to the departure of many older girls due to team uncertainty.

Yet, a determined Diddy managed to field a team most weeks, with many girls playing two or three games each weekend.

Her dedication and adaptability have been pivotal in keeping the team competitive and motivated.

Diddy's contributions extend beyond the local club. She has been involved with Team VIC SSV for three years, initially as the Manager of the U15s and later as the Assistant Coach of the U12/13s in 2023/24.

This role involves selecting the team and traveling for a week in August to compete at the national level.

Diddy Wagner is more than just a coach to the girls; she is a mentor, supporter and often a driver - with her car always ready with spare shorts, socks and boots for new players.

Balancing her coaching duties with her responsibilities as a parent, her passion and dedication shine through in every aspect of her involvement with the Youth Girls team.

The Phillip Island Football Netball Club is incredibly fortunate to have such a passionate and dedicated coach in Diddy Wagner.

As Women's Coaching Month continues, her story serves as an inspiration, highlighting the vital role women play in shaping the future of AFL and fostering the next generation of athletes.
