South Gippsland Golf has just completed a very successful eight round Junior Golf Series.
Junior golfers, ranging from 8 to 18 years old, from beginners to experienced, were encouraged to come and play in either a 9-hole or 18-hole competition held at various South Gippsland clubs.
It was fabulous to see the emerging talent in the district from these junior golfers as they played each week.
The final round was held last week in perfect conditions at Leongatha Golf Club, with Billie Wrigley of Korumburra Golf Club declared the overall series winner with an impressive total of 192 points (best 5 Stableford scores).
Billie played very consistent golf throughout the series to win by 20 points from his nearest rivals and thoroughly deserved the title for 2020.
Great final round scores by Thomas Simon of Leongatha Golf Club (39pts) and Levi Hickey Woorayl Golf Club (42pts) saw them both leap frog into equal second place with 172 points each – a fabulous effort.
Congratulations to all juniors who participated over the eight rounds.
On announcing the winners Brendan Simon, South Gippsland Junior Coordinator, expressed how impressive these young junior golfers were and more importantly what an amazing group of young enthusiastic human beings they are.
He also thanked the parents, grandparents and siblings who had supported the young golfers during the event.
The support from the clubs who accommodated the juniors on a Sunday morning was also acknowledged – Korumburra, Woorayl, Foster, Phillip Island, Lang Lang and Leongatha Golf Clubs who also helped with a Christmas BBQ to celebrate the Junior Series.
Whilst Brendan was instrumental in getting the series up and running, he also thanked those who assisted with the organizing – Elly Berryman (Woorayl), John Payne (Korumburra), Michael Grist (Woorayl), and his family (thanks Fiona!).
It certainly is great to see Junior golf active again in South Gippsland in an organized competition and the 2021 season is looked forward to in the hope of building further participation.

South Gippsland Golf Inc also announced that the South Gippsland Junior Pennant team – the South Gippsland Sharks – had played in a virtual pennant series against other clubs in the state in the month of November.
Playing in Region 1 against Sanctuary Lakes, Riverside Essendon, Keysborough and Eastern Sharks 1, the South Gippsland Sharks were successful in winning all their matches and were announced as the Region 1 Winners for 2020.
This is an outstanding achievement for the team and South Gippsland golf, considering South Gippsland has been absent from junior pennant for a number of years.
Congratulations to Brendan Simon, South Gippsland Junior coordinator, and the team of Levi Hickey, Jake Wrigley, Levi Cocksedge, Beau Elkin, Billie Wrigley, Thomas Simon, Mitch McGrath, Tom Hanily, Josh Smith, Ned Hanily and Spencer Chadwick.
The presentation of the pennant and medals will be made at a date to be advised.
