Strong performance by Juniors in Round 2 clash
5 min read

U14 Red

After a disappointing first game of the season, the team was frothing to get back out and get their first win of the season. They were lucky enough to have Spencer Smith playing his first ever game of football with us and several other players return after missing the opening game.

From the get-go, it was evident this was a different team from the week before; they started from the middle of the ground where Bailey Parry was great in the ruck and Maddi Leed was dominating in the midfield.

The island had most of the ball in the first quarter and were able to move it from the defensive half into the forward 50, making it count with a great individual effort from Dexter Goodall getting an intercept mark and kicking the goal to open the scoring.

Going into quarter time the island was up by two points.

The second quarter, they were once again dominating the game in all areas of the ground with Kolby Carton, Archer Bailey-Cox and Bailey Taylor all linking up well when rebounding from a defensive 50 into the forward line.

The pressure throughout the quarter was excellent, led by Kai Sturt and Dustin Naismith who, on either wing, were laying some big tackles which resulted in a goal from Bohdi Cooper.

At halftime, the island was down by seven points due to some late goals by Wonthaggi.

Into the second half, Maddi Leed continued an incredible run from the midfield combining with Callum Chambers, with the run and carry from halfback being led by Captain Jackson Allan and Xavier Holmes.

The island was finally able to make their dominance count on the scoreboard. Lachlan Newstead slotted a banana from the boundary and it was beginning to look as if the island was just going to keep kicking goals. They had the ball locked in for the whole quarter but just couldn’t make it count on the scoreboard – they were down nine points at the last break.

After three-quarter time, the island was able to get the ball out of the middle with a tap from Bailey to Maddi, who got it deep into the forward line and followed up her kick with a goal.

From there, it was an even game, the ball was going from one end to the other quite quickly with Archer and Xavier rebounding from the back 50 with ease.

The island was able to kick a few points but no goals, and opposition Wonthaggi, were able to move the ball quickly and get a couple of quick goals to extend their lead.

The island’s U14 Reds are keen to keep improving their performance as the season progresses.

Congratulations to Maddi Leed who was awarded the Anzac medal after a strong game.

U14 Blue

The U14 Blues took on their over-the-bridge rivals (and mates), Kilcunda Bass last Saturday.

Both teams went in hard with Bass snagging the first goal, but the island were quick to reply, with Mason kicking his first for the day.

Both teams were hard at the ball, but Bass showed some impressive skills and kicked four unanswered goals to give them a strong lead at the end of the first.

Marley was giving it his all, kicking a goal which turned the game to the island’s favour. Harvey and Tierlin were putting pressure on all over the ground and with several great goals from Caleb, another from Mason and one from Sam, the team slowly clawed their way back into the game.

With four minutes to go, there was only one goal in it. Everyone gave it their all and with the ball going back and forth - it was anyone’s game.

Despite this, the island couldn’t convert and Kilcunda Bass took home the win by six points.

First goal kickers Tanner and Billy played a strong game.

U10 Blue

The sun was shining for the U10 Blue’s clash against Kilcunda Bass at the Kennel.

The game was tight early on, but the defence of Captain Jack and Leith kept Killy Bass at bay.

Midfielders, Dash and Harvey moved the ball well, and great teamwork resulted in goals from both Sam and Cooper.

Throughout the second-quarter, Thomas and Logan applied pressure and tackled well. Meanwhile, Ryder, Reeve and Levi created space and opportunities for smooth ball movement which lead to goals by Jonty and Eddie.

During the third-quarter, Teddy, Oscar and Elijah kept the ball moving well, and Quill and William laid classic Bulldog tackles. The team was working well and soon Hugo booted his first goal, along with Ethan snapping one from the boundary.

The team finished the game with Cooper and Tate giving their all, while Ryden and Nicolas demonstrated true Bulldog grit, resulting in great goals from Eddie and Leith.

Goals: Eddie, Ethan, Sam, Leith, Jonty, Cooper and Hugo.

Awards: Eddie Maier (Anzac medal), Leith Cameron, Cooper Bennett, Levi Dedrick and William Laughton-McConnon.
