What started as a hobby – making steel letterboxes and fire pits with a mate – has now blossomed into a full-time business for Steve Humphris.

Established in 2022, Island Style Steel specialises in custom metal fabrication.

From the practical – fencing and balustrades, to the decorative – firepits and sculptures, Island Style Steel provides a customised service that will help you bring your steel ideas to reality.

With a background in engineering, Steve has also spent a lifetime tinkering and creating.

“My dad is one of those guys who knows a little about everything. Growing up, he taught me about welding, metal work, cars and electronics,” Steve said.

The move to make his metal work hobby a full-time career was gradual.

“My mate Matty and I started off just making things for friends, like letterboxes and firepits.

“Then we got asked to do signage for businesses, like Wattle Bank House in Wonthaggi.”

Word spread from there and the job requests kept coming. When the demands outstripped the hobby status, Steve stepped up and took it to a professional level, setting up Island Style Steel Pty Ltd.

As well as referrals from existing customers, Steve said companies like Island Steel have been a great support, sending jobs his way.

The work has included outdoor furniture, fences, and creating garden beds from corten steel. He’s even created a unique steel chandelier for one friend.

More recently, he’s worked with older customers, installing balustrades and safety rails.

While the company specialises in bespoke items, made to order, there are big projects on the books as well, including providing rails for skateparks and the steel work copings on the top of the skate bowls.

The company prides itself on understanding the local environment, and what’s required to ensure products are long lasting.
