Stomal therapy assists those in need
Bass Coast Health’s stomal therapy nurses Julie Eastwood and Sarah Ziegerink are enhancing the lives of people living with stomas.

Having a stoma fitted is a life-changing experience for patients and fortunately there are dedicated nurses at Bass Coast Health (BCH) who understand just how they feel.

A stoma is a surgically created opening on one’s body which allows for the passage of bodily wastes. Stomas may be necessary due to a medical condition or surgery.

Stomas may be permanent or temporary depending on the reason the person requires a stoma. Common stomas include colostomies, ileostomies and ileal conduits, and there are also others.

Stomal therapy nurses are nurses who provide specialised care to people with stomas.

BCH has two Stomal Therapy nurses: Julie Eastwood and Sarah Ziegerink. They’re available three days per week, and offer home visits and phone support.

National Stomal Therapy Week runs from June 20 – 26 and is a timely reminder of help that is available for people with stomas in our community.

“We have special training and a genuine interest in stomal therapy, and we are here to help people adjust to living with a stoma and to continue to do so on an ongoing basis,” Julie said.

To access the services of a Stomal Therapy Nurse, phone the BCH Access referral team on 5671 9215 or email stomaltherapy@basscoasthealth.org.au.
