The island will be alive with the sound of music this weekend, with the inaugural Phillip Island and Bass Coast Ukulele Festival, on November 11 and 12.

Thanks to generous sponsorship from Bass Coast Shire Council, Westernport Water, Bendigo Bank and Jordan Crugnale (Member for Bass), all events at the festival are free – and tickets for most events have been quickly snapped up.

Organisers said the festival provides an opportunity for people to take part in a celebration of the arts and creativity, through the fun of ukulele playing.

“The primary key aims are to promote a healthy community, strengthen connection between people and public spaces and have fun in a welcoming environment,” they said.

Everyone is invited to come a long and “have a go”, with 10 loan ukuleles available throughout the festival.

For details of workshops, including any remaining tickets, visit the Phillip Island and Bass Coast Ukulele Festival Facebook page.

Saturday workshops are at The Wild Food Farm, Rhyll and a 2pm – 3pm Play along at Churchill Island with Awkward Strangers.

On Saturday evening at 6pm is an Open Mic at Dimples, which is sold out.

Most of the tickets for the Saturday events have been exhausted and there is a waitlist for participants.

However organisers said music fans are welcome to attend The Wild Food Farm or Churchill Island to grab a cuppa or some food and watch the daytime events.

The free Sunday picnic will be a wonderful celebration of various artists and groups facilitating a play along at Erehwon Point Amphitheatre, from 10am until 3.30pm.

BYO chair, waste free picnic, water bottle to refill, keeper cup, or picnic blanket.

Rotary is providing a sausage sizzle and Mamacita's coffee will be on site.

There are over 10 raffle prizes and lots of local handmade crafts "all things ukulele" for sale.

The major raffle prize is over $700 in value and includes a Tanglewood Ukulele with gig bag donated by National Music Australia.

All profits from the raffle and craft sales will go towards the establishment of Bass Coast Health Music Therapy Program in the aged care and hospital.

So bring along some gold coins and make Sunday a fantastic success, and help strengthen the community.

The picnic is a free event, but organisers are asking people to book tickets to help with their planning. Tickets are available at www.trybooking.com/CKXPH
