Bass Coast College Year 10 students were out and about in the community doing work experience last week.

Work experience student Charlotte Hutchinson spent her week in the Advertiser office.

Out on assignment, she caught up with a number of her fellow students based in Cowes and asked for their reflections.

Here is her report.

Sarah Kennedy, Paige Riley, Lucy Dean and Rhania Zamfirescu all spent last week experiencing what they describe as the incredibly complex job of being at teacher at Cowes Primary School.

All four girls went to Cowes Primary themselves, so it was with a different perspective that they came back.

All four were keen to see if a career in teaching was for them.

Sarah, Lucy and Rhania spent their week working in the Prep classrooms and have enjoyed their time with the school’s youngest students.

Paige spent her week with a Grade four class.

“I really enjoyed it but would prefer to work with younger students,” she said.

The girls enjoyed going back to their old school, seeing how things were done and working alongside their old teachers.

The girls were given many different tasks throughout the week, assisting students in the classroom, running play activities, and undertaking a variety of other tasks.

All the girls say they have a newfound appreciation for teachers and the jobs they do.

Throughout the week they realised how full on the job of teaching is, how attentive teaches must be to their students all day, and that teaching takes patience ...

“I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I leave school and thought this would be a great opportunity to see if teaching is something I would like,” Sarah said.

“I have always wanted to be an art teacher at a primary school,” said Rhianna.

“I’ve had experience working with children and wanted to experience it in a different setting such as a classroom,” she added.

When asked if the girls thought teaching was a possible career for them, all said they were still considering teaching as a future possibility.

The girls said they are extremely grateful to the school for the opportunity and have enjoyed their work experience at Cowes Primary.

Working at CYC

Nick Jordan-Antonovich spent his week working at CYC in Cowes.

He spent his week alongside the CYC work force and learning many different trade skills.

Nick chose to complete his work experience at CYC because he felt he would be exposed to a variety of trades and become familiar himself with a range of jobs out there.

“I know people here as well, which has made the work experience a lot better,” Nick said.

He enjoyed experiencing a working environment and a working day.

“The long days are the biggest shock to me,” Nick added.

The week has been invaluable for Nick because he said he now knows he wants to complete a trade when he leaves school, and he knows what to expect at a workplace.

“I really enjoyed this week and have learnt a lot from it.”
