Sunset Strip by Suzie Miller - tender, gripping, funny!
Offshore Theatre Group's first production for 2024 is a production of Sunset Strip.
Offshore Theatre Group's first production for 2024 is a production of Sunset Strip written by Suzie Miller and directed by Remi D'Agostin.
It runs from June 13 - 16 at the Black Box Theatre at Newhaven College, with evening and matinee performances.
Remi D'Agostin is thrilled with her cast who were selected from a pool of 19 people who auditioned recently.
Four characters reveal the importance of family and place in Sunset Strip. The story is set in a fading NSW country town named Sunset Strip which once sat on a beautiful lake but is now a dried-up sand bowl.
Ray is the 60+year old father of Phoebe and Caroline. They are all flawed. Ray can be all knowing at times but is in and out of episodes of dementia. Caroline is the elder daughter. On the surface she's a successful, bright city lawyer but she carries scars and is not all she seems. Phoebe is charismatic, endearing but naive and suffers a 'not good enough' second best complex. Phoebe's boyfriend
Teddy is enigmatic. Described as a no hoper, a deadhead there is much more to Teddy who plays a pivotal part in the family dynamics and plot development.
Sunset Strip was described in the Sydney Morning Herald as a "tenderly gripping, frequently funny exploration of familial love, loyalty and patience." Suzie Miller explores harsh realities of life such as cancer, dementia and addiction while gently acknowledging the importance of belonging and believing.
Remi D'Agostin and her actors are rehearsing Miller's play with reverence and sensitivity and finding the humour in lives which go out of balance. Sunset Strip is a play which could easily be exaggerated, soap opera-ish and clich d but it isn't. It's real. It peels layers of past hurt and past love to take the characters and the audience forward.
The performance is at the Black Box Theatre, Newhaven College, 1770 Phillip Island Road.
Tickets are available now on TryBooking for the two evening shows on June 13 and 14 and two matinees on June 15 and 16.
