Superbikes season officially kicks off
The 2024 World Superbikes Championship has officially begun.
Day one of the 2024 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship officially kicked off today at the Phillip Island Circuit in typical island fashion - giving us rain, wind and sunshine.
Despite the incessant weather, fans flocked to catch a piece of the action.
From the first revs of the Australian Supersport 300’s engines, race enthusiasts streamed through the gates setting the atmosphere for the day.
As the morning ticked on, the Australian Supersports and Australian Superbikes hit the newly resurfaced tarmac for their first free practice sessions of the weekend, followed on by World Supersport.
As the support categories completed their initial sessions, the World Superbike boys made their way out of the pits to kick off Free Practice 1 in the late morning, with Free Practice 2 following on in the late afternoon.
Taking World Superbike timing honours as Friday wrapped, would be Brit, Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing WorldSBK Team) with a solid 1’29.042 during the latter half of Free Practice 2.
Tailing closely in second on the combined time-sheets, Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing Ducati) would close out the sessions with a best time of 1’29.101 (FP2), followed by Andrea Locatelli (Pata Prometeon Yamaha) with 1’29.197 (FP1).
