Supporting the community that supports us
On a certain warm Saturday afternoon at the beach, there’s a feeling in the air that’s hard to describe but easy to recognise: community at its best.
On a certain warm Saturday afternoon at the beach, there’s a feeling in the air that’s hard to describe but easy to recognise: community at its best.
Events like the San Remo Channel Challenge and the Cowes Classic are two of these kinds of Saturdays, and they’ve become much-loved traditions, bringing people together not just to compete, but to give back.
For years, the Community Bank branches of San Remo, Cowes and Grantville have proudly supported these events, knowing that every splash helps raise vital funds for the Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club. The Cowes Classic also supports the Phillip Island Football and Netball Club.
The lifesaving club’s volunteers give countless hours to patrol our beaches, train young lifesavers and keep locals and visitors safe. The funds raised through these events help ensure they have the equipment, training and facilities needed to continue that important work.
“We couldn’t do the work we do to keep the beaches of Phillip Island safe and run special events without the support of our wonderful local community and organisations like the Community Bank,” says Woolamai Beach SLSC President, Jason Close.
“We really appreciate this support.”
John Matthews, Chair of San Remo District Financial Services (SRDFS) and former member of WBSLSC says “supporting events like these and Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club reflects what our Community Bank is all about.
“Banking is our business, but community is our purpose.”
To date, the three Community Bank branches have returned over $6 million to local not-for-profit groups, sporting clubs and initiatives in Cowes, San Remo, Grantville and the surrounding districts.
This includes over 67 defibrillators, two of which were donated to Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club in the last round of grants in 2025. The club also received a $22,968 grant in 2023 for a concrete pathway as well as a Welcome to Woolamai sign and information display board.
“By banking locally, customers help ensure that this cycle of support continues,” John adds. “It all makes a big difference to the community.”
