Ten-year-old Wesley Gijsbers and his grandfather Richard were among more than 20 volunteers who took part in this year's first Phillip Island Landcare tree planting morning.
The event was at a farm at the rear of Swan Lake in Ventnor, and is part of a continuing project that will see up to 45,000 trees planted on the property, owned by John Fields.
"There are plenty of challenges to planting trees on this land, including purple hens, who pull out the plants, and browsing by wallabies,"John told volunteers, adding the property was currently very dry, with rain much-needed.
The next planting event is July 6 on Back Beach Road and on July 16 and 27 the carnival site, on the corner of Ventnor and Phillip Island roads, will see a large tree planting project.
The season wraps up on August 24, with the final planting on the Rhyll-Newhaven Road.
