The Phillip Island Blue Under 12 team faced one of their most challenging games of the season on Sunday.

Not only did Wonthaggi provide a very tough competition, but the wind was also determined to carry the ball off the ground before the young pups could get it onto their boots.

Nervous about the situation the Blues had a slow start and neither team were able to score a goal in the first quarter.

Coach Mick gave them a rev up at quarter time, telling them they have to be the first to the ball if they wanted to have a chance of winning.

Young Jarrah Rutherford heard this message loud and clear and was quick to give the Island the first goal of the match.

Brax Scheibel and the general Kane Patton held up a strong defence in the second quarter preventing Wonthaggi from making any further advance.

Harvey Paterson and Dexter Goodall played disciplined football and power forward Roy Paterson was relentless with his second efforts allowing Phillip Island a 14-point lead at the end of the third quarter.

Wonthaggi came back, fighting hard in the fourth and final quarter, scoring a goal of their own and giving the pups some finals-like pressure.

A challenge was tackled front on by Jarrah Rutherford, kicking his third goal for the game and securing the win for Phillip Island.

Final score Phillip Island Blues 24 to Wonthaggi 9.
