Visitors who enjoy Phillip Island's environment are being encouraged to reciprocate under a new tourism campaign running this summer.

The "Love Phillip Island Millowl - Give Back this Summer" campaign has different options for tourists - as well as local businesses - to be involved through donating and volunteering.

The campaign - created by Destination Phillip Island (DPI) - has a goal to raise about $20,000 for tree planting and wildlife protection on the island to March 22 (World Water Day) - the "equivalent of five cents per person for everyone who visits the island in peak season".

"Support local environmental initiatives that have a direct impact to safeguard the island's natural beauty for future generations to appreciate and enjoy," the campaign states.

"Phillip Island is one very special place loved by visitors and locals alike ... By supporting local environment projects you can give back and make a real difference."

Visitors can take part in "voluntourism" activities to help care for the island that include cleaning up Cape Woolamai's beaches and working bees on the Rhyll and Ventnor coastline.
