Wild storms, including thunder, lightning, rain and hail hit Phillip Island and Bass Coast last night, followed by strong winds.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for the most of the state, including Bass Coast and Gippsland, with damaging winds average 6--70 km/h, with peak gusts of 100km/h expected.

"Damaging wind gusts may reach up to 110 km/h about the Bass Coast and Mornington Peninsula during Friday morning," the BOM advised.

Many areas are currently without power, with AusNet reporting many will not have power restored until after 3pm today.

Emergency services advises people should stay inside and avoid travel where possible, with driving conditions expected to be dangerous.

Trees and powerlines are down across the island, with reports that Phillip Island Road is blocked near the Eco Resort due to a tree down, as well as a large tree uprooted in Coghlan Road near the golf course.

A video captured the damage as a tree down in Chapel Street took out power lines.
