A sad start to New Year’s day this morning after a family of five geese were run down by a driver on the Phillip Island Road.

While four were killed, one was left seriously injured and suffering.

Wildlife rescue volunteers say it is a critical reminder that with visitors pouring onto Phillip Island roads, drivers must take extra care for animals.

Whether the goose kill was accidental or deliberate, by a tourist or local resident, wildlife should not be left to suffer and drivers must call the 24/7 Wildlife Victoria number on 03 8400 7300, say volunteers.

A passer-by to the goose kill, which happened after the Ramada resort heading into Cowes just before 7am on January 1, described it as “carnage”.

Anyone who sees injured or deceased wildlife on or near roads should call Wildlife Victoria.

About 30 road signs warning drivers to “care for our wildlife” were rolled out across Phillip Island in December a bid to reduce the ever-increasing roadkill toll.
